Just another leaf in the wall

* Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday

The week began with our usual lovely trip into the village.  My task this day was to concrete the stairs and make the last step with Pek.  I very much enjoyed do that.  Makes me feel like a proper builder!

We definitely work well together despite us only being able to communicate with three phrases:  "OK", "No good" and "One more".  He's such a good laugh and breaks out into random sing song of one of his Khmer love songs from time to time.  It's only taken me and Ame 4 1/2 weeks to establish that Suun and Pek are brothers.  I think they could be step brothers as they don't really look that alike.  But it explains why they are so sweet to each other and why Pek is so good around Suun's kids.  Also Suun is married to Ghan's daughter.  It's a real family affair.

Ame worked tirelessly on the inner windows.  There was a slight problem with the alignment of the windows because of a combination of dodgey, warped wood.  But she got there in the end.

On the way back on Monday we got a good snap of the monks in the village.  There always about near the temple.  They bring a nice bit of colour in all the brown and green of the jungle.

That evening me and Ame had Moy burgers and watched a film.  A very nice night in.

On Tuesday, we had a foreign object tied to the tuk-tuk:  our ladder.  Definitely not many road safety laws in Camdodia.

All of Tuesday was making walls.  This is all we've got left really.  Ame helped split some wood for the frames.

Me and Jack, a previous volunteer who has come out again, whipped through some wall creation.

We even managed to hang the wall which was really good.

You could see the family of the house we're really happy about this.  It's almost like they can finally see the moving in date.  The kids have both been helping loads.  I got a sneaky pic of the boy looking super pleased with our house creation!

In the evening, we went for an Indian curry!  It was really nice and good to kick back with Grant, Christian, Jack (the builders at the mo) and some other people they knew.

Wednesday, guess what?  More walls.  Oh but this time also windows!  Whilst we were macheting some of the sugar palm, one of the little puppies thought it would be fun to start playing in the scrapings.  It made for a cute little photo.

Wednesday night we stayed in and had another epic card session.

Thursday, more wall as you'd imagine.  In the evening we went out to the newly opened COF cafe (called COFfee - Clever huh?!) to watch Mayble play guitar.

We stuck about a bit but it was about 40 degrees Celsius in the alley so we moved on to a $1 cocktail and $0.50 beer joint.  Needless to say we had one to many.  Ame went home and I went out to the local club "Angkor What?" for a dance and more drinkie poos.

Of course this made for hard work this morning after getting in at 01:30 (and I was an early one - some of the builders got back at 03:30!).  But regardless, I got up at 06:00 cos we got WALLS to build!  We did make some good progress.  The moving ceremony will be next Thursday hopefully.  By the end of the day we had another wall up and nearly, ever so nearly completed the massive wall.  A few windows were made and one has been hung.

This evening we are going to a pub quiz as it is the last time we will see Wally, the retired Scottish firefighter, as me and Ame have organised a trip to Kratie for 8 of us this weekend.  We also have Monday off so we need to achieve a lot on Tuesday and Wednesday.

We can't really believe it is the end of week 5 and we only have 1 week to go.  It's been so amazing and it's really good to have a special little trip booked this weekend with a load of volunteers to see the rare fresh water dolphins!
