Sea Malteesers

Monday.  We got up and efficiently proceeded to the campervan hire centre.  After a bit of mucking about, returning the car, and packing the van, we were off it the big (well relatively) Voyager Britz Campervan!  I say off.  Off to the super market!  Then we were really off.  I drove the first 2 hours down the coast.  We could see big mountains in the background and it was a good chatty drive.

We stopped for lunch in the smallest of towns, St Andrews, (population 170) and one very friendly fisherman.  After him trying to depart the wisdom of the Kiwi's on us, we were off again towards our main event of the day, the Moeraki Boulders.  They are 2m wide perfectly spherical boulders that were formed in the cliffs over millions of years and rolled out onto the beach.

They were very beautiful and intriguing rocks (and we thought they looked like a certain popular choc treat).  They brought out the kid in everyone.  You are allowed to climb on them (because they are solid as a, well, rock) so we had lots of fun on them.  We then had a nice milkshake in the Moeraki Boulders Cafe and Amy tried the local lime milkshake.  Hmmmm, it's alright but I'm not sure I'll have one.

The rain and wind started as we approached Dunedin but we found the Dunedin Holiday Park no problem.  Other than missing a vital part of our van table (I feel a compliant coming on...) we settled down to a couple of beers listening to Johnny Cash.  Whilst I cooked Spag Bog (2 nights worth so we don't have to cook tomorrow night) and Ame and Dad planned out the later end of our trip.  By the time we finished dinner, it was nearly 21:00!  So it was bed making time.  I think we did very well for our first attempt.  We will get a lot more efficient over the next 13 days I think.

It was a good first day with a long drive but it's got us to the beautiful Otago peninsula and tomorrow morning we're doing a penguin tour...
