Saturday
I was not impressed when the alarm went off at 5.30am but up we got and swiftly made our way to get the car and drive to the ferry port. It didn't take as long as we thought and we were there just as check in opened and ended up being the first car onto the ferry! This is a view of Wellington as we left the dock...
I went and found myself a comfy seat at the front by the huge window for a read and a snooze and Rob headed out onto deck. The journey went quickly and smoothly and before we knew it we were both up on the viewing deck taking in the beautiful sights of the Marlborough Sounds.
We had been told that the South Island is beautiful but you never fully appreciate these things until you see it for yourself. Every view is complex, epic and magical and somehow the sunlight here casts an extra atmosphere to set it all off. We got a good chance to take in some scenery today as our drive from the ferry port at Picton took us from midday until 6pm!
On the way we stopped a couple of times to recaffeinate, once at a scrummy beachside restaurant which we plan to return to with Rob's dad when we back up there in a couple of weeks.
The second time a winery whose Marlorough Sauvingnon Blanc won the gold prize last year! Somehow we resisted a wine tasting.
The other stop we made en route was when we caught sight of a fur seal colony on the rocks!! We pulled up and jumped out and as we walked back along the bank one seal was so close that it gave us a little growl as we walked by! I think it was one of the best experiences so far watching the group of charming sluggish beasts flop about on the rocks and then effortlessly glide and swoosh through the waves.
When we arrived in Christchurch we were pretty knackered and glad to see how nice our motel room is; it has a double for Rob and I plus a twin room for Rob's dad when he arrives tomorrow. We're heading to the airport tomorrow morning to collect him.
